Frequently Asked Questions
Are all families, regardless of their approach to Jewish religious observance, comfortable at Hillel?
At Hillel, we welcome all Jewish families and educate children from across the full spectrum of Jewish life. Our students learn to love and appreciate their rich and complex heritage and become proud members of the Jewish community. We celebrate the diversity of Jewish experience and tradition.
How does Hillel’s focus on Hebrew language contribute to my child’s learning of core curriculum topics, and will it set them behind other children in their grade level?
We have developed our curriculum to incorporate the study of Hebrew in a manner that enhances, rather than detracts, from your child’s overall learning experience. Hebrew language is essential to the understanding of Jewish texts and modern Israel, and this unique trilingual education greatly benefits a child’s understanding of all languages.
Do Hillel’s French language programs meet the standards of the Ontario curriculum, and will my child be adequately prepared to succeed in a bilingual environment?
Hillel offers French language classes to all students from Kindergarten to Grade 8 that currently meet or exceed Ontario Ministry guidelines. Core French is taught from K-3 using the innovative AIM (Accelerated Integrated Method) program. An Extended French program is available from Grades 4-8. Our graduates are provided with a solid foundation in the French language to be successful in high school French Immersion, and ultimately to thrive in Ottawa’s bilingual environment.
Does Hillel allow students the opportunity to learn about other races and religions, and to develop an understanding of gender equality, social responsibility, and environmental responsibility?
Hillel teaches, above all else, the Jewish value of respect for others that transcends sex, race, or religion. The Hillel curriculum embraces all aspects of Canada’s multicultural society, and recognizes that, to be successful in today’s globalized world, students must have the freedom to explore new and exciting ideas.
With an ambitious curriculum that comprises three different languages, is the Hillel program too fast-paced for children with learning disabilities and special needs?
Our commitment to academic success applies to every one of our students, whatever their individual needs might be. Therefore, Hillel offers a suite of support services, such as an on-site school counselor, an occupational therapist, and a special services department that includes resource help as well as enrichment. Our school is also wheelchair-accessible, and we possess the resources to help students who are learning English as a second language.
