General Studies

Language Arts :  We emphasize the development of grammatical skills, phonics, spelling, and writing, which leads into the study of novels, short stories, and poetry.  All students at Hillel are taught to appreciate literature.

Science:  Through an innovative, hands-on, investigative approach, students learn how complex, scientific concepts apply to their daily lives, providing them with a deeper understanding of how the world works.

Thanks to a generous donation from a member of the community, we are able to have the program Scientists in Schools come to every grade twice a year to give our students some experience in hands-on science experimenting.

Our K-8 Science Fair is one of our academic highlights. Those involved range from Kindergarten to Grade 8 and participate alongside students from other schools. Three students from Grade 7 and three students from Grade 8 are selected to go on to the Regional Science Fair.

Mathematics:  Students at OJCS develop excellent mathematical skills with our five-strand program that encompasses problem-solving, logic, and reasoning activities.  Enrichment programs are offered every week for Grades 1-8, allowing students to further strengthen their mathematical abilities.

Social Studies :  Our students are exposed to a diverse range of topics, including Canadian history, government systems, and physical geography, as well as topics that nurture their understanding of Tikkun Olam (repairing the world), such as community-building and social responsibility.

Physical Education : We teach Phys-Ed classes to all our students, and offer an early-morning gym program that promotes health and fitness and an intramural sports league that runs during the lunch hour.
